Platforms

Page history last edited by David Zimmerman 14 years, 2 months ago

Twitter can be accessed via a variety of platforms. In fact, one of the advantages of Twitter is its relative platform independence; Brian P. Watson has stated: "almost any organization could find value in a platform-independent group-messaging service, for routine communications and emergencies. In fact, Twitter's cross-platform groupcasting aspect may be more valuable than the brevity of its messages."

However, Twitter access, and even available Twitter features, can differ depending upon the platform chosen. This page discusses the platforms from which Twitter can be accessed.

Windows

Many Twitter users access Twitter via a web browser or other client in the Windows operating system.

Linux

Similarly, Linux users can access Twitter via a web browser or a third party application.

Macintosh

Macintosh users can use a variety of applications to access Twitter, including web browser access.

Mobile SMS

Mobile users may choose to access Twitter via the SMS interface.

(what might be nice, here, is a description on how to connect your phone to Twitter to use SMS)

Windows Mobile

In addition to using SMS, users of smartphones with the Windows Mobile operating system can access Twitter via the Internet Explorer web browser included with Windows Mobile.

The URL m.twitter.com leads to a mobile-friendly Twitter interface with reduced graphics and a reduced functionality set. m.twitter.com/home is the default page, which shows a "you + friends" view. The mobile page also allows you to access "your profile," "people you follow," "find folks!" and a "public timeline."

Attempts to reach certain pages via mobile Twitter will send you to the regular Twitter equivalents. For example, the URL m.twitter.com/replies will display the twitter.com/replies page. Similarly, m.twitter.com/direct_messages redirects to twitter.com/direct_messages instead. This allows mobile Twitter users to access content that would not otherwise be available. (It appears, however, that starring of favorite tweets is not possible from a mobile platform, at least when Windows Mobile 5 is used.)

I started this page to provide a place to describe the mobile Twitter web browsing experience. However, I have included slots for other platforms, such as Windows and mobile SMS.
