(As a newbie I was confused about the difference between 'friend' and 'follow'. The help pages didn't clear it up for me. So, here is a start at a clear explanation.)
There are two important things to know about Friend and Follow:
- They are independent. You can Friend someone without Following them and you can Follow someone without Friending them.
- Friend and Follow are both "one-way". That is, if Alice adds Bob as a Friend, that doesn't mean Bob has Alice for a friend.
Friend
- You see their updates, along with yours, on the Web on your home page.
- You do not see their updates on your phone or IM client, unless you are following them.
- They can send you a direct message. You cannot send them a direct message unless they add you as a friend.
- Web links and commands are: Add and Remove
- When you first add someone as a Friend, you automatically Follow them.
Follow
- You get their updates on your phone or IM client.
- You do not see their updates on the Web on your home page.
- You cannot direct message them. They cannot direct message you.
- Web links and commands are: Follow and Leave
Lists of Friends and Follows
- List of Friends you Added: on your home page, click the N Friends link
- List of people you are Following: not available
- List of people who Added you as a Friend: not available
- List of People who are Following you: on your home page, click the N Followers link
Other Bits
Using the Web interface, how do you follow someone without adding them as a Friend? The only way I have seen to do it is to:
- go to someone's page
- you can't follow them without adding them as a Friend
- click the 'N Friends' link to see their Friends
- you can choose to follow one of their Friends
So if you want to follow Bob without adding him
- go to Bob's page
- look at each of his friends
- find a friend of Bob's (call her Alice) that has Bob as a friend
- go to Alice's page
- look at Alice's list of friends
- Bob should be there and there should be a Follow Bob link
- phew! ;-)
